National Women’s History Month 2021

Who is Zerna Sharp? She was an American educator and book editor who created characters and the concept for the “Dick and Jane” series for beginning readers.  She was criticized for the stereotypical content of the stories.  I, as a beginning reader, only knew that those few words on each page of the book were magic to me and quickened my confidence. I was eager to learn and match the captivating illustrations to the words! What a great memory of learning to read.

From that special memory, I started my exploration business called See Jane Explore.  You see, Zerna Sharp was, at one time and long before my time, a teacher in the small town of La Porte, Indiana where I grew up and learned to read.  I discovered this fact as I launched my business. In the process, I was deciding how to incorporate the ideas of “See Jane” with the idea of helping families, individuals and anyone in between discover unique year-round events and activities in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego Counties in California.  This was my passion as I was already taking my four granddaughters on unique explorations. Thus, See Jane Explore was born!

I celebrate Zerna Sharp during March 2021 National Women’s History Month, as a moving creative force in our Nation’s history.  She had a vision to help people learn a vital skill necessary to succeed in life, and to make life exhilarating!  I am grateful for the influence this woman had on my life.  And, truly the gift of reading continues to be a treasure both in “old school” written and digital mediums.
