Now that the raised bed is prepared (see my previous blog of 5/29/18), we’ll first decide what to plant. Check with your local garden center regarding the compatible plants for your region and growing season. For the purpose of this blog I am planting in Southern California.
Steps to follow for plantings:
Study the light and select plantings for each area.
Always allow enough room in between plantings. Refer to the instructions on the package of seeds or on the plastic marker that comes with the plant
Markers for plantings is suggested. This is a chance to be creative and whimsical in your garden. Most nurseries have a nice selection of fun, comical and basic markers. How about painted rocks? This would be a fun family activity!
Follow care instructions for each planting. Plants, vegetables or herbs may require different depths for planting. These and other instructions will be shown on the package or on the plastic marker placed in the individual plant.
Now, we are ready to look for companion plants which assist in the growth of others by attracting beneficial insects, repelling pests, or providing nutrients, shade, or support. “The Old Farmers Almanac” has a fabulous planting guide to follow at https://www.almanac.com/content/companion-planting-guide
Be patient…growth takes time. Who doesn’t love a ripe tomato picked fresh from the vine? Or, a fresh and crisp cucumber! Together on two pieces of bread and you’ve got lunch!!
