Hiking with the Grandkids: Making Memories on the Trail
One of the best things about living in Southern California is the weather. It’s almost always perfect for getting outside, which means plenty of chances to go hiking with the grandkids. There are many trails to explore, from easy walks to more adventurous climbs. And honestly, hiking with your grandkids? That’s where the real fun—and the best memories—begin.
Exploring Together
Getting the kids out in nature is magic. There are no screens, no rush—just fresh air, sunshine, and time to explore. When I’ve taken my granddaughters hiking, we make a day of it. Sometimes, we visit a botanical garden, and sometimes, we hit a trail in the hills. They love spotting butterflies, finding cool plants, and asking a million questions. It is such a joy to see the world through their eyes.
Let Them Pack Their Own Gear
Before we head out, I always remind them to bring their own backpack. Kids love having their own little pack to carry the essentials—water bottles, wipes, a camera, a phone, and, of course, their notebook. A roomy backpack with a main compartment and front pocket works excellently, and there are plenty of colorful options on Amazon, like this one. It makes them feel independent and prepared for the adventure ahead.
Teaching Respect for Nature
We also talk about taking care of the places we visit. Every rock, leaf, and tree contributes to keeping the environment healthy. It’s tempting to take home a pretty pebble or a wildflower, but I remind them that there wouldn’t be much left to enjoy if everyone did that.
Capture the Memories
Instead of collecting souvenirs, I gave each of them a notebook to draw in.
They sketch what they see—flowers, birds, even funny-shaped clouds. Sometimes we bring a camera to snap a few photos, too. Later, we flip through their drawings and pictures and relive the day again.
The Best Part
Those moments on the trail—laughing, learning, and exploring together—are the ones that stick. You don’t need a big plan or fancy gear. Just grab your sneakers, pack some snacks, and make some memories.
