The warming of Summer soil in California has cooled, and it’s now time for Fall planting.

Plants are ready to get established and grow their roots. Just as a strong foundation is necessary before a building is erected, so, too, fall plants and flowers require a deep, organically rich soil as their foundation.  To make the soil even richer and more fertile, add worms- they’re real game changers!  “They help to increase the amount of air and water that gets into the soil. They break down organic matter, like leaves and grass into things that plants can use. When they eat, they leave behind castings that are a very valuable type of fertilizer. Earthworms are sustainable farm helpers!”

So, let’s talk about the many choices available to plant. ‘Tis the season to enjoy bountiful harvests of beets, cabbage, lettuce (all types: butterhead, romaine, loose leaf, iceberg), carrots, as well as flowers and herbs such as pansies, chrysanthemums, zinnia, cilantro, lavender, rosemary, thyme to name a few. (TIP: Remember that pansies and chrysanthemums are edible.) Imagine the rainbow of colors that will burst forth in your garden with these plantings!  You’ll probably want to show it off to family and friends. And, perhaps share the fruits of your labor!  I, for one, am always grateful to receive fresh, home-grown produce.

Always check with your local nursery with any questions you may have. They’re experts who will guide you in the right direction.

One more Tip: I am trusting that we’ll get some much-needed rain in Southern California. Consider setting up a rain barrel to collect rain water for watering plants. CLICK HERE to learn more.

Happy Fall Planting Y’all.
